The Recreation Specialist I – Part time- Park Events and Programs duties will include, but not be limited to:
Assist in creatively planning, coordinating, supervising and evaluating approximately 15 large scale Park Special Events and 30-35 Park Outdoor Programs and Classes annually. Assist with departmental and city-wide programs and events as needed.
Assist in recruitment and coordination of food vendors, exhibitors, and entertainment; negotiate and prepare contracts and agreements
Manage equipment and services needed for events and programs.
Provide customer service and ensure/enforce safety standards, rules, regulations, policy and procedures related to outdoor special events and programs.
Provide manual labor for event and program set-up and breakdown.
Supervise, mentor and/or coach part time employees, interns or volunteers
Lead event teams and outdoor program classes such as kayaking and archery.
Respond to customer inquiries via phone and email
Utilize and track resources; maintain statistics for monthly/annual and budgetary reports
Operate office equipment including computer, scanner, fax and copy machine,
Order supplies and inventory for programs and events.
Collect, process, and receipt vendor/exhibitor payments and participant registrations
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Official City Job Description:
Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader, special events planner, outdoor/park programmer, park manager or recreation program supervisor.
Must be available to work varied hours, days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
Will require to have, or obtain, a current and valid driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.

The individual selected for this position will be based at the Parks and Recreation Administration building but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules can be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on programs, events, and facility coverage to include working in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions. Scheduled hours up to 35 hours per week. Must have a valid driver’s license.
This position is anticipated to work an average of between 32-35 hours per week, making the selected candidate potentially eligible for the City’s health benefit plan. Final determination will be made upon employment.
