Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities The Admissions Counselor and Travel Coordinator position in the Office of Admissions is responsible for the recruitment of new undergraduate students. This position recruits high-achieving students from a diverse background by visiting high schools in target areas and meeting with students and parents at on-campus and off-campus events. Serves as a university liaison, provides customer service and information about the university to prospective undergraduate students, their parents, guidance counselors and other constituencies. Conducts information sessions, interviews, and counseling sessions with prospective undergraduate students and their parents to provide information about the university, admissions processes, and university policies and procedures. Evaluates previous years’ data to determine the areas to target for recruitment events. Registers for and assigns counselors and recruiters to events that promote VCU in high visibility and target areas. Increases the efficiency of the process of selecting, assigning and registering for these events. Works in conjunction with other University departments/areas to promote all of the opportunities within the VCU community and to recruit students in under-represented populations. Reviews student application information to determine admissibility to the university keeping in line with deadlines and goals of the office’s review timeline. Serves as main contact for all visit and college fair invitations. This position will also be required to work some hours over the winter break.
Minimum Hiring Standards Excellent oral and written communication skills.Knowledge of VCU programs and admission policies.Ability to use office automation, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software and well as the Banner Student Information System and ImageNow imaging software.Ability to provide clear direction and establish efficient priorities.Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.Work well with others in an office setting.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Previous customer service and public speaking experience.Experience using a variety of computer software.Proficiency in the use of Microsoft word, knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel.Ability to work in a diverse environment is required
Preferred Hiring Standards Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent applicable experience or training.Experience in higher education.Experience working with high-achieving students.
