Welfare Fraud Investigator (Western Region)

THE POSITION The Welfare Fraud Investigator (WFI) is responsible for investigating applicants and/or recipients of Cash, SNAP, Medical, Energy, Long Term Care, and Subsidized Childcare benefit programs administered by the Department of Human Services. WFIs gather information, review documents, analyze data, and conduct courthouse searches, witness interviews, and surveillance when necessary to provide Income Maintenance Caseworkers relevant information to authorize, reject, reduce, and/or close assistance benefits. WFIs act as a witness during administrative appeal hearings.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position involves investigative work in the Office of State Inspector General in the Bureau of Fraud Prevention and Prosecution. An employee in this class is responsible for conducting benefit application investigations and other related investigations or activities relating to programs administered by agencies under the Governor's jurisdiction. An employee in this class handles assignments that would include, but are not limited to, reviewing documents, conducting interviews, analyzing data, and preparing reports. The employee advises the supervisor of the status of investigation and the evidence and makes recommendations. The employee works with benefit applicants, Department of Human Services employees, and persons with information about residency, assets, income, and other eligibility factors. The employee utilizes proper investigative techniques, conducts investigations, interviews witnesses and subjects; analyzes statements, case records, and matches; conducts record searches at courthouses, banks, and employers; and develops leads that are followed to a reasonable end. Investigators travel to the field to conduct investigations.

The employee prepares for and provides testimony for hearings and other related proceedings.

WORK SCHEDULE:
8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday
Lunch Period: 1 Hour REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY One year of experience in responsible criminal investigation work; and a bachelor's degree; OR

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to Act 29, the agency the selected candidate will be serving has limited law enforcement powers and requires all employees with access to agency systems to undergo fingerprinting and an in-depth background check to include criminal, tax, and credit history.
