The PSU Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is a nationally accredited healthcare facility that offers medical, counseling, dental, health promotion and education, and academic testing services to the students of Portland State University. The center consists of over 100 clinical and administrative staff, and there are currently 20,000 students eligible to use SHAC services.
The Department of Health Services provides comprehensive primary care, same day care, and acupuncture services to approximately 100 patients per day throughout the academic term. Health Services also provides first aid services to the PSU community.
This is a full-time, Academic Year (9-month) position, running from September to June every year. Typically, there are opportunities to pick up shifts during the summer months based on the coverage needs of the clinic. Payment for 9-month employees may be disbursed across 12 months.
The Medical Assistant (MA) assists Registered Nurses, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants in the care of patients in the Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC). This position rooms patients, takes vital signs (blood pressure, temp, respiratory rate, O2, weight and height), and records medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
The MA supports clinician care by doing basic procedures such as ear lavage, nebulizer treatments, EKG’s, Snellen eye exams, CLIA waived testing, phlebotomy, collecting specimens and other laboratory type duties. This position also fits patients for crutches and orthopedic splints and teaches patients on proper use. In addition, the MA assists clinicians during procedures such as colposcopy and IUD insertions. The MA transports patients that need assistance to x-ray, using a wheelchair, and may take X-rays of chests and extremities if X-ray certified.
Facility maintenance duties include removing used and non-sterile supplies and instruments from examination, treatment or resting rooms; washing and sterilization of instruments, preparing surgical packs, cleaning exam, treatment, and resting rooms with appropriate disinfectants, changing linens, and making beds. Administrative duties of the MA consist of assisting with referrals, helping with phone calls, assisting with insurance questions, etc.
Minimum Qualifications from Classification
Six months experience providing health care support in a health care facility; OR
Completion of a vocational training program in a health care support area (e.g., Medical Office Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant).
NOTE: Preference will be given to those applicants who possess a knowledge of medical terminology.

The starting hourly rate for this position will be between $14.03 and $17.02. The starting salary may be negotiable above this range, however it will be dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
This includes an excellent benefits package including 95% employer paid premiums (employees and eligible dependents) and significantly reduced tuition rates for employee and eligible dependents at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
