Position Summary: Administers the Chemistry Stockroom.

JOB DUTIES: The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of importance or significance: Maintain a stockroom layout that includes earthquake-safe storage of chemicals and glassware. Maintain and update as necessary a safe and coherent organizational structure for the chemical stockroom. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of chemicals stored throughout the chemistry department. Review and interpret all inventory information and ensure that SDS are retained and distributed appropriately for all chemicals throughout the department. Provide support to teaching laboratories by ensuring that: all materials and apparatus (glassware, chemicals, instrumentation, etc.) are on-hand, clean, and in working order; all solutions are made to the appropriate specifications of concentration and freshness; all equipment and materials are returned to storage/storage following labs; and all waste generated during teaching labs is labeled and stored appropriately. Coordinate purchasing and intake of lab equipment, materials, and chemicals; process and maintain budget requests and records; research and solicit bids for equipment and materials; meet with sales representatives. Supervise student lab assistants in the Chemistry Department. Remain current on industry standards for safe handling and storage of chemicals and equipment and basic chemical hygiene. Perform other duties related to the above as necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate science discipline, plus at least one year of relevant technical experience, OR a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills were acquired. Thorough knowledge of laboratory chemicals and chemical hygiene practices. Proficiency in the preparation and handling of solid, liquid, and solution samples in specified quantities, concentrations, and purities. Proficiency using standard desktop computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and willingness to learn new software. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required. Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills and able to balance and meet competing deadlines. Strong interpersonal, supervisory and administrative skills. Demonstrated effective written, oral and presentation skills. Ability to provide support to faculty in planning and coordinating labs. Ability to work proactively and independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty and students.
