Technical Trainee - Cast Partial

Job description          

JOB SUMMARY: To fabricate dental prosthetic appliances from customer prescription forms and to repair such devices per customer orders. Dental prosthetic appliances consist primarily of full- and partial-dentures, crowns, bridges, full- and partial-cast partials, and assorted orthodontia devices (splints, veneers, etc.).
APPLICATION OF JOB DESCRIPTION: Generally, a Technician will fabricate only one type of dental prosthetic appliance (i.e., a Technician who fabricates a denture appliance does not have the knowledge or experience to fabricate a crown, bridge, or cast partial appliance, and vice versa). Furthermore, the fabrication process for each appliance differs and has many steps, and a Technician will generally have knowledge in only one or two steps in that process. This job description comprehensively covers all fabrication processes for all appliances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Plan the appropriate setup and operation of various laboratory tools and ensure proper quantities of raw material inventory is on hand for fabrication of appliances Read prescription forms or specifications from customers and examine dental models or impressions from customers to determine the design of the appliance to be fabricated Scan appliance into lab management database which tracks technician?s work performed and amount of time spent fabricating each appliance Create a model of the customer?s patient?s mouth by pouring plaster into the dental model or impression allowing plaster to set Fabricate, alter or repair the specified appliance according to customer?s instructions on the prescription form.Fabrication processes vary based on the appliance, but include the following: Dentures: (1) Preparing (box and pour impression material, trim models, set and seal bites and articulate; (2) Setting Up (select and setup teeth); (3) Waxing (wax dentures for try-in and/or finish; (4) Processing (invest and boil-out, pack); and (5) Finishing (finish and contour dentures, polish dentures) Cast Partials: (1) Designing (survey and design cases, block-outs); (2) Modelling (make refractory model, invest model); (3) Waxing (wax framework, attach retention devices, carve teeth and sprue); (4) Casting and Recovery (cast metal, divest cases); and (5) Finishing (trim, rough finish and final polish) Crowns and Bridges: (1) Preparing (box and prepare, pour, trim and set pins, set bite and articulate, cut out and trim dies); (2) Waxing (wax, seal margin, and sprue understructures, full cast); (3) Investing and Casting (invest, cast, recover, sandblast, and cut off and weigh); and (4) Finishing (finish, polish, and clean up understructures, full cast) Porcelain Work on Appliances: (1) Metal Conditioning and Opaquing (clean up and micro-blast, de-gas, first and second opaque); (2) Building Up; (3) Contouring; (4) Glazing; and (5) Finishing (polish and cleanup) Orthodontia: (1) Fabricating basic appliances as defined by laboratory; (2) Fabricating intermediate appliances as defined by laboratory; (3) Fabricating advanced appliances as defined by laboratory; (4) Fabricating study models; (5) Rx Bonding; (6) Fabricating Unilaterals; and (6) Other orthodontia fabrications Test appliance for conformance to specifications and accuracy of occlusion, using articulators and micrometers Place appliance on apparatus that mimics bite and movement of patient?s jaw to evaluate functionality of appliance Scan appliance into lab management database upon completion of designated fabrication tasks assigned to technician and place appliance in designated area for the next step in the fabrication process May involve contact with customer to clarify instructions not clearly identified on the prescription form or if problems arise in the fabrication process Maintain a neat and clean workspace to prevent workplace damage and minimize potential for injury
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/EQUIPMENT USED: Exposure to clean, climate-controlled laboratory environment with some grinders, lathes, ovens, burners, steamers and boiling water Requires sitting for long periods of time, uncommon posture when fabricating appliances and continuous maneuvering of hands and fingers while working with small tools Uses hand pieces, articulators, steamer cleaners, grinders, Bunsen burners, burnt ovens, tongs, pliers, knives, lathes, burs, open hot water tanks, pneumatic machines, milling machines, scanners, wands, computers (limited) Required to wear safety goggles and in certain cases surgical masks

1. High school graduate or equivalent
2. Minimum one to two years specialized training in dental technology
3. Certified Dental Technician (CDT) certification preferred but not required
4. Minimum three to five years fabricating dental prosthetic appliances
5. Requires manual dexterity, strong attention to detail and good spatial and visual perception
6. Ability to lift up to ten pounds and occasionally heavier
7. Requires flexibility and adaptability to meet laboratory demands
8. Ability to communicate with customers regarding technical ramifications, specifications and appliance designs
9. Ability to follow safety rules when operating hand tools
10. Can work under general supervision
