Duties Summary The Transportation Assistant (TA) position serves under the Eligibility and Enrollment Section of the Business Office and performs a wide variety of duties in direct support of Veterans and other beneficiaries seeking and receiving medical treatment. The TA acts as an assistant to the clinical and professional staff. Areas of coverage include beneficiary travel, patient's funds, patient registration/intake, admission/patient transfer facilitation, and eligibility for medical benefits.
Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: Determines eligibility/entitlement for benefits utilizing various methods. Coordinates the administrative processing of inpatient and outpatient services Is responsible for patient-specific demographic, financial and insurance information being accurate as it drives all medical-related benefits. Advises veterans of their entitlement to medical benefits and discusses co-payment requirements to veterans in discretionary categories. Interviews veterans claiming reimbursement of travel expenses (beneficiary travel) and counsels them regarding their eligibility to receive payment at government expense. Reviews ambulance invoices for services obtained, including ambulance, hired car or taxi. Verifies accuracy of invoices and prepares necessary related documents for payment. Computes and verified transportation mileage and subsistence costs related to travel claims. Manages fund control activity for beneficiary travel. Manages personal funds of patients and serves as 'trustee' for these funds. Advises the next-of-kin regarding death benefits. Arranges for proper disposition of body and effects at the time of death, as well as contacts the medical examiner, when necessary. Provides administrative support to the Catastrophically Disabled Evaluation Program.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: performing administrative duties for a Medical Center and/or Outpatient Clinic; eligibility/entitlement determination; customer service; processing claims; funds management; reviewing documents for accuracy; working with medical and death benefits; providing administrative support to others. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent will be exposed to stressful working situations that require a professional attitude and collective reasoning. The incumbent is subject to a high volume of work, the need for accuracy, frequency of interruptions and ever changing demands due to program changes.

Additional information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
