Social Services Associate I/II

The Division of Juvenile Justice is recruiting to fill a Social Services Associate I/II in the Kenai Juvenile Probation office.
This full-time position, under the supervision of the Juvenile Probation Officer III, provides a full range of administrative support and technical assistance in the Kenai Juvenile Probation Office. The position works closely with the Kenai District Supervisor and four (4) Juvenile Probation Officers and includes direct contact with youth and their families, law enforcement and agency personnel, attorneys and victims. The position is located in a professional office within the Kenai Peninsula Youth Facility.

Duties will include but are not limited to: Computer data entry. Preparation of a variety of Word documents. Distribution of legal documents. Arranging and preparing travel documents. Client contact and escorts. Paraprofessional probation support and liaison with regional offices for administrative processes.
Our ideal candidate will possess many of the following knowledge, skills, abilities and experience: One year of experience providing assistance, information, or referrals to the public. Experience, education and/or training in the human services or criminal/juvenile justice fields. Experience providing reception and phone services including responding to inquiries and successfully assisting staff members and the public. Experience arranging and processing travel for staff and/or clients is preferred. Experience ordering supplies. Experience maintaining files/records is preferred. Experience utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and management information systems. Ability to use positive communication skills to respectfully interact with people of various economic, ethnic and/or emotional circumstances. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with angry or upset individuals. Ability to multi-task, prioritize, problem solve, and work under significant time constraints with frequent interruptions while maintaining patience and flexibility. Ability to maintain professionalism, boundaries and confidentiality while reviewing criminal police reports and/or discussing uncomfortable subjects with victims of criminal activity, parents or staff. Willing and able to travel, provide escorts of juveniles as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Social Services Associate I

High school diploma or the equivalent
And
One year of experience providing assistance, information, or referrals to the public.

Substitution: Post-secondary education from an accredited institution may substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal 1 month of experience).

Special Note:
Some positions require a valid Alaska driver's license, a background check and fingerprinting. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.

The qualifying public contact experience may be gained in any occupational field and at any level within the occupation.

'Equivalent' includes a G.E.D., or completion of any basic adult education course of 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 hours per week), or six months of work experience performing duties related to the job class, or twelve months of work experience involving some routine tasks related to the job in question, or highest grade of school completed plus amount of work experience which totals 12 years.

Social Services Associate II

High School diploma or the equivalent
And
One year of technical experience (at any level) providing assistance, information, or referrals to the public related to social services, health care, or legal services.

Substitution:
Post-secondary education from an accredited institution in the social, behavior or health sciences, law or a closely related field may substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equals 1 month of experience).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the I or II level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position. If filled at the Level I, promotion to the Level II will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and final approval by supervisor. It is recommended that you apply for all levels if you qualify.
